Fond Farewell, Michelle Jeske: A Legacy of Leadership and Love for Libraries

Farewell, Michelle Jeske: A Legacy of Leadership and Love for Libraries

After 33 years in public service and 10 remarkable years as City Librarian, Michelle Jeske will soon turn the page on an extraordinary chapter in her career. As she enters what she fondly calls her “Jubilee”—a season of gratitude, reflection, and new beginnings—we at the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation pause to honor her extraordinary impact on our library system and the community it serves.

Michelle’s tenure as City Librarian has been marked by visionary leadership, steadfast dedication, and a deep belief in the power of libraries to transform lives. She led Denver Public Library through historic moments of change—from navigating a global pandemic to completing a major renovation of the library’s Central location. Under her guidance, DPL became not just a place to borrow books, but a community cornerstone for creativity, learning, connection, and belonging.

Among her most lasting contributions is the passage of Ballot Measure 2i, a game-changing initiative that now brings in $37 million annually to support library operations, services, and staffing. Her leadership in co-creating and passing this measure—alongside the Friends Foundation and fellow advocates—ensured that the library system will remain strong and sustainable for generations to come.

Michelle has also been a champion of equity and inclusion. She prioritized the development of teen services, helped expand ideaLAB makerspaces citywide, and reimagined library spaces to better serve children, families, and adults of all backgrounds. Most recently, she celebrated the reopening of the beautifully renovated Central Library, with its new Park View event space, expansive Children’s Library, and long-awaited Teen Library—projects made possible in large part because of her vision and persistence.

Her partnership with the Friends Foundation has been nothing short of transformational. Together, we stabilized donor engagement, diversified funding streams, and created long-term strategies that reflect the evolving needs of the communities we serve. Michelle always understood that public funding and philanthropic support go hand in hand—and she made sure both had a seat at the table.

For those of us lucky enough to work alongside her, Michelle’s legacy is more than accomplishments. It’s in the way she lights up a room when talking about books, the way she listens to staff, patrons, and supporters, and the way she inspires everyone around her to dream bigger about what libraries can be.

Michelle Jeske is more than a library leader. She is a friend, a mentor, and a force for good. While we will deeply miss her leadership, we are endlessly grateful for her service—and so proud to carry her vision forward.

Thank you, Michelle. You’ll always have a home at DPL.
