Act Now: Tell the City To Invest in Central Library

Mayor Hancock has released plans for a proposed $450 million Denver infrastructure bond package. We appreciate that the bond includes funding for three library branches. However, this announcement surprised and concerned us because NO funding was included for the Central Library's renovation despite the bond committee's recommendation that Central Library should receive priority.

Denver deserves a 21st-century library. To finish the renovation phase currently underway at the Central Library, $19 MM is still needed. This renovation is on time and on budget. These funds would help build a Teen Space and an Outdoor Play Space at the civic core of our community.

You can help by:

  • Reaching out to your City Council representative to ask them to request that the RISE Denver Bond include $19 MM in funding for the Central Library renovation. (Contact info and links on this page!)
  • Reaching out to the Mayor's office and ask the Mayor to include $19 MM in funding for the Central Library renovation in the RISE Denver Bond.
  • Sharing this information with others.

UPDATE: On August 3, Denver's Finance and Governance Committee reviewed the funding package for the RISE Denver bond. At the meeting, city council members acted on your advocacy by voicing support for the community-wide benefits provided by Denver Public Library. Despite their efforts, they were unable to get a commitment from the City to secure funding for the $19 MM that is still needed to complete the first phase of the Central Library renovation

Please do continue to reach out to the Mayor and your Councilmember to voice support for public investment in the renovation of Denver’s Central Library. This advocacy is effective!

SAMPLE LETTER #1 TO COUNCIL

Dear Councilmember (Name):

Thank you for supporting equitable library services in Denver. I appreciate your recognition of the library as a key builder of community health by serving knowledge and information to all free of charge. I am grateful that support for Westwood, Globeville and Hampden libraries is included in the Mayor's RISE Denver bond proposal to you. Please support those projects. I am disappointed that funding for the Central Library's Renovation was not included in the Mayor's proposal to Council and would like for you to make room for the Central renovation in the bond.

Central Library was prioritized for $57 MM in the funding list created by the Bond Executive Committee but was not included in the Council proposal you have received. Right now, Central Library is undergoing a partial renovation that requires $19 MM to successfully complete. I am asking you to support the $19 MM to complete Central's initial phase. An anchor institution in Denver, this library branch is key to the civic core of the City. It is unique among the bond projects being considered, as it is a key builder of community health by serving knowledge and information to all free of charge.

(Elaborate here on how a strong library system impacts your community.)

I encourage you to learn more about this and to make an informed decision. Once you do, I respectfully ask that you find a way to include this $19 MM for the Central Library. Thank you for your continued support.

SAMPLE LETTER #2 TO COUNCIL

Dear Councilmember (Name):

Thank you for recognizing the library as a vital cornerstone of our community. I am disappointed that the Central Library renovation is not included in the RISE Denver bond proposal that Mayor Hancock has sent to City Council. Right now, Central Library is undergoing a partial renovation that requires $19 MM to complete successfully. The portions of the project that are not yet funded include a much-needed outdoor play space and teen library.

(Elaborate here on how a strong library system impacts your community.)

I am asking you to find a way to include $19 MM in this bond request to complete Central Library's initial phase. Please learn more about this to make an informed decision about this job-creating project at the civic core of our City. Thank you for your support.
